God in the Shadows
Evil in God’s World
330pbk, by Brian Morley
Crime, famine, disease, war, earthquakes, floods; we open our newspapers, or switch on our television sets, and are confronted with pain and suffering in the world. And that doesn't include a myriad of lesser hurts: daily ones which, while they don't show up on the news, tear at us nonetheless—relationship breakdowns, disloyalty, rejection. We all experience pain and evil to some extent and are affected by others who experience it as well. Our suffering is made worse by being unable to understand or explain why it is happening—Where is God in this? Why doesn't he do something? Is he cruel? Is he there? Even many Christians, who should know some of the answers, can only offer pop-theology cliches to the question of 'Why bad things happen?' Can't we be more helpful than that? We should have more confidence. The Bible sheds light on the ultimate resolution of the problem of evil, a problem so central to human experience. Dr. Morley explores how there can be a God who is loving, just and righteous in spite of the fact that the world is full of pain and evil. Are you putting the blame in the right place? Morley looks at the major reasons for pain and evil: investigating misconceptions about God and illness, the origins of poverty, birth defects and the causes of war. You will be gripped by the thought-provoking nature of his arguments and enlightened by a coping strategy for pain and evil—one that builds a fully-connected world-view into a realisation of our personal part in resolving the problem of evil. God has understandable and wonderful reasons for bringing about a world like ours—a place of tragedy... and a place of grace. – [From the blurb]

When The Darkness Will Not Lift
Doing What We Can While We Wait for God—and Joy
79pbk, by John Piper
Even the most faithful, focused Christians can encounter periods of depression and spiritual darkness when joy seems to stay just out of reach. It can happen because of sin, satanic assault, distressing circumstances, or hereditary and other physical causes. In When the Darkness Will Not Lift, John Piper aims to give some comfort and guidance to those experiencing spiritual darkness. Readers will gain insight into the physical side of depression and spiritual darkness, what it means to wait on the Lord in a time of darkness, how unconfessed sin can clog our joy, and how to minister to others who are living without light. Piper uses real-life examples and sensitive narrative to show readers abundant reason to hope that God will pull them out of the pit of despair and into the light once again.” [From the blurb]

What’s the Lord’s Supper?
Basics of the Reformed Faith
32pbk, by Richard D Phillips
Ever since the night Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper, this sacrament
has played a central role in the faith and practice of the church. That
is why it is odd that many believers think so little of the Lord’s Supper.
‘They seldom observe it and assign to it little significance,’ Phillips writes.
‘They derive no assurance, and seek no grace, as they receive from the Lord’s Table.
How remarkable this is!’ The goal of this booklet is to help readers understand
the biblical institution of this sacrament, the theological issues surrounding it,
and the pastoral considerations for administering and receiving it. – [From the blurb]

Catechism in
Conversation
144pp;
by Linus Chua
There was a
time when the Westminster Shorter Catechism was well-known
and highly regarded in Presbyterian Churches and even
in Calvinistic Baptist Churches. Today, it is generally
not so. In fact, a few years ago, a pastor of a conservative
Presbyterian church, who saw me reading the Catechism,
was so intrigued by it that he asked me where he could
get a copy! In all his years of ministry, he had apparently
only read about it in church history textbooks. I hold
nothing against this pastor, but I was not only amazed
but also saddened that the church should have allowed
this diamond of a tool for Christian education to slip
into oblivion while eagerly gorging the trashy Sunday
School materials that are being pandered everywhere.

“DON’T
MAKE ME COUNT TO THREE!”
A Mom’s Look at
Heart-Oriented Discipline
155pbk, by Ginger Plowman
“Do you find yourself threatening, repeating your
instructions, or raising your voice in an attempt to
get your children to obey? Are you discouraged because
it seems you just can't reach the heart of your child?
Through personal experience and the practical application
of Scripture, Ginger Plowman encourages and equips moms
to reach past the outward behavior of their children
and dive deeply into the issues of the heart. With wit
and tact Ginger steers mothers away from the “survival
mode” that is so easy to fall into and reminds
them of the great calling they have. “Don’t
Make Me Count to Three!” is full of practical advice
and biblical encouragement to do more than just survive
another day with the kids.” – [From the publisher’s

POLISHING
GOD’S MONUMENTS
Pillars of Hope for Punishing Times
296pbk, by Jim Andrews
“As I closed the cover on this book, 294 pages (yet
only one day) after beginning, it struck me that this is
undoubtedly one of the best books I've read so far this
year. I skimmed back through my files to see how many other
books I've read in 2007 and can see that it is at least
sixty or seventy. So it's no small thing to realize that
this is one of the best. I simply can't recommend Polishing
God's Monuments too highly. I wholeheartedly agree with
Bruce Ware who writes, ‘To enter into this theological
reflection on suffering is to accept the challenge to grow
deeply in Christ, and to cherish the sure and certain promise
of the gospel." This book gripped my heart and helped
me cherish the promises of the gospel like few books I've
read recently. I commend it to you, trusting you will benefit
from it as I have. Perhaps the greatest tribute I can render
Polishing God's Monuments is this: I read almost 300 pages
about suffering and pain, yet closed the book with tears
of joy in my eyes, rejoicing at the greatness of our sovereign
and gracious God. – Tim Challies” – [From

Meng's pointed treatment of the subject will assure you that
